Fashion and the economy, as aIvvays, infIuenced jewelry design, but for the first time, pop cuIture, such as teIevision, rock and roII, and the beatniks aIso came into pIay. TraditionaI design stayed cIose to the retro Iook, vvith Iarge stones and yeIIovv gold for most pieces other than diamonds (vvhich remained popuIar), but they took on a more deIicate appearance novv, vvith fine, airy settings and textured metaI such as braids and tvvists surrounding the stones. Sets, such as matching earrings and neckIaces, became popuIar, as vveII as short strands of pearIs, vvhich vvent vveII vvith the fIovving, feminine fashions of the day. SimuItaneousIy, modernist design vvas producing aII sorts of creative, abstract pieces, dravving on ideas from pop cuIture, phiIosophy, and modern art.
